EARTH - THE ART OF GLOBAL WARNING EXHIBTION When I was invited to participate on "EARTH - The Art of Global Warning" Exhibition - I was challenged with the inner question of how a fashion photographer could fit and represent the serious concerns proposed then. EARTH- The Art of Global Warning, a multimedia art show curated by Alcinda Saphira, René Nascimento, Ana Lourdes Alvarenga and produced by Migrating Media & Productions and Alcinda Saphira Studios invited 16 artists like myself, from different backgrounds to call public attention to global warming, war, violence and waste meanwhile enticing solutions through art, recycling and renewable energies. Once the curatorships main objective was to pave a way for social and environmental responsibility among artists, the general public, sponsors and collectors using art and fun to achieve that goal - I decided to reinterpret "fashion photography" glamorizing objects and personages portraying the "right attitude" : recycling is fun and beautiful to do and wear. Although fashion and waste are many times interconnected, I believe conscious consumerism can definitely reduce and positively impact the damages humans have been producing in our planet - it's time to wear our beliefs. So, I called Liz Carvalho a fashion designer who had also been invited to exhibit on Earth Exhibition. Liz was creating a beautiful wearable collection made entirely from recyclable materials such as plastic bags, wires, bottle caps, and newspapers. Together we elaborated the style and trend to fallow. Once Liz finished her collection, I began planning the "environmental frames" for her clothes and booking the right models for each photo shoot. I chose urban locations where no nature could be traced like junk yards, concrete deposits and industrial buildings rooftops at west side Manhattan. For almost three months we explored the back stage of NYC's concrete jungle provoking street curiosity, admiration and many interesting encounters. The models Jene, Dorothy, Stephanie, Sandra, Zara, Ana and Stefanija gave to each garment the final expression of what became the "Recycled Fashion" by Liz Carvalho and Renata Ferraz. The "Recycled Fashion" can be viewed on "Earth - The Art of Global Warning Exhibition" from November 13th to December 1st, 2007 at New Century Artist Gallery, 530 West 25th Street 4th floor, New York, NY. The "Recycled Fashion" Intervention is schedule to happen on November 16th. After the exhibition, all photos will be posted on www.renataferraz.com, www.lizcarvalhocouture.com and www.artinearth.com
